Projects and Planning in the HP-OK Neighborhood
Overview
Publicly-funded projects in the HP-OK neighborhood fall into two
categories: 1) Arlington County-initiated projects such as the
Westover-Reed project and the recently completed Westover shopping
center streetscape project, and 2) neighborhood-initiated projects such
as the various curb/gutter/sidewalk projects..
The HP-OK Civic Association is the primary interface to Arlington
County's Neighborhood Conservation Program. The NC program aproves
funding for curb/gutter/sidewalk projects.
Privately funded projects are rare in the HP-OK Neighborhood as
almost all land has already been developed. There are occasional infill
projects consisting of 1-2 houses, and sometimes older houses are
demolished and replaced.

Current County Projects
- Westover-Reed
HP-OK has been heavily involved in the Westover Library-Reed School
replacement project. HP-OK has worked to bring the facility closer to
Washington Blvd and has pressured the county to provide underground
parking for the facility so that open space on the site is maximized.
Arlington County posts project information here,
and Arlington County Public Schools posts information here.
The project is currently stalled on the issue of funding for the
parking garage.
Rosie McCabe has been monitoring the project for HP-OK. Please
contact her if you have any questions.
Other Projects
- Pedestrian Safety
HP-OK has started a Pedestrian Safety Commmitee to address safety
issues within the community.
A letter was
sent
to Jay Fisette of the Arlingtoin County Board concerning the Washington
Blvd
and Ohio St. intersection. Mr. Fisette's email and response was encouraging.
- Washington Blvd. Traffic Calming Study
HP-OK has supported efforts to reduced traffic speed and volume on
Washington Blvd. in the past. Watch this space for more details on the
current effort.
- I-66 Widening
On December 8, 2003 HP-OK Civic Association wrote to Governor Mark
Warner opposing the potential widening of Interstate 66.
Past Projects
- Swanson
While Swanson Intermediate school is not within the HP-OK boundries,
HP-OK supported the construction of the 2-storey expansion on the
northwest corner of the site (the right side of the school as one faces
it from Washington Blvd.).
